How to Win Roulette

Is it possible to outsmart one of the oldest games of chance in the gambling world? Is there a betting strategy that guarantees a sure win when playing Roulette? Read along to find out!

The Little Wheel of Great Fortune

Roulette is one of the oldest gambling games, and it dates way back to the 18th century in France. The name originated from the French word for ‘little wheel.’ However, the origin of Roulette is not quite clear, since many believe it was discovered a century earlier by accident — It was a failed experiment by Blaise Pascal, who tried to create a perpetual motion machine.

Regardless, Roulette is quite simple to play once you understand all the rules, which aren’t that hard at all. The game is played on a table which contains numbers from 1 to 36 — These numbers are coloured red and black. There is also a 0 pocket, or a 00 pocket if you decide to play the American version of Roulette. The croupier will spin the wheel with a white ball on it, and this ball will determine your fate depending on which number it lands.

Namely, while playing Roulette, it’s useful to know the difference between the inside bets and the outside bets. Some believe that the inside bets give you higher odds of winning — These are the bets on specific numbers on the table. The outside bets, however, are bets outside the number map, and they have different options:

  • betting on the colour — since there is only red and black, there is a 50% chance of getting it right
  • odd or even bets — they pay the same as bets on the colour
  • a dozen bets — bets on the column, there are 3 columns with 12 numbers each.

When you play Roulette, as well as any other casino game, you need to keep in mind that the house always wins. Their advantage (a house edge) comes precisely from the number 0, or 00 in the American version. Accordingly, you can never fully master a game if your wish is to win every time easily. That’s not how casino games work. However, there are ways to try to get some great wins but do not get too caught up, because after all, Roulette is a game of chance.

The Basics

Before we cover more complex strategies everyone can try, we will remind you of the basic tips you can follow first. Namely, a good table can get you a long way. This is tricky, though, because you may find yourself drawn to tables that offer great minimum inside bets, but that does not guarantee you better odds. Also, tables can have a board displaying the last number that the ball landed on, but do not be tempted! The odds are always the same.

Roulette Strategy

After that, you should observe a couple of spins just to get a sense of the game, and maybe pick up other players’ habits along the way. Not only that, but you can often notice that the croupiers have some habits as well, and that can help you get accustomed to the way the game plays out. ‘Croupier’ is a term you will often hear when playing the European Roulette, while in the American version, they simply call it ‘dealer.’ You should also avoid tables where the players look frustrated and irritated. It can significantly reduce your delight when playing the game.

Playing for Fun

Before you start playing Roulette, you can always try to play the fun mode version in many online casinos that offer free spins. This can help you go a long way, since playing Roulette online makes it easier to get familiar with the game. Today, you can find many casinos that offer this option to Roulette players. All the free spins you can use with no strings attached are plentiful.

Placing Bets

The Roulette bets placement goes pretty smoothly thanks to the professional dealers. When a round is finished, they will allow some time for all the players to choose the amount of their bets. You may be tempted to double your bet after the initial win, but that does not necessarily mean you will win the next time too. Betting systems are different, and they can never secure a win.

After the ball lands on a winning number, the dealer will mark it, and take losing bets off the table first before paying the winner. When placing bets, you will notice some of the players are unsure what to do, so they will let others to the betting first. This is very tricky, and not something we would recommend since everyone’s luck is different.

Once you covered the basics and played a few rounds, you can try some of the more advanced strategies that we will explain next.

The Martingale Strategy

This strategy is used when you are trying to recover your losses. The strategy encourages you to double your bets after each loss. This results in a small profit, but a profit nonetheless.

This method works best on tables with small minimum bets and high maximum ones. You should keep in mind that the key to Martingale is to manage your expectations by keeping your bets small after each win.

Of course, there are some negative sides to this strategy. For example, if you keep betting continually, there is a chance you will run out of money faster — So in the long run, it won’t matter if you win the next round or not. The key to this game plan to work is consistency, so plan your wagers accordingly. Additionally, there is also a Grand Martingale strategy, where you triple your bets instead of doubling them. This strategy doesn’t really work as a lot of players already tested it, but feel free to try it for fun. It can only make your experience more entertaining.

The Reverse Martingale Strategy

As the name suggests, this strategy consists of increasing your bets after winning, and keeping them smaller after you lose. This will keep minimising your losses in the long run.

Accordingly, you should find a table with high minimum bets and low maximum ones. The key is to keep betting double when you are winning, but if you lose, you can just go back to the original bet. This method is quite tricky, and you need to recognise when to quit while you’re ahead.

The D’Alembert Strategy

This strategy is an excellent alternative if you want to play safe, especially if the Martingale ones are too much for you. In this case, you will increase or decrease your bets only by one instead of doubling them each time. Additionally, the experts advise walking away from the table when you’ve hit the same amount of wins and losses.

The James Bond Strategy

One of the most beloved British writers, Ian Fleming, came up with this one in his books — His famous international spy, James Bond, used it in his quests at many casinos.

This strategy is considered to be quite risky, but with big risks come big rewards. In order to follow through with it, you will need to spare at least $200. You will need to divide them as follows:

  • you should put $140 on the higher numbers on the table (from 19 and up)
  • then, put $50 on the numbers between 13 and 18
  • in the end, put $10 on 0, just to be safe.

Do not forget that the number 0 is a tricky one since it’s a house edge, and the chances of the house winning are doubled if you play the American version, because of the number 00 — Something that Bond would probably never allow himself to do.

In case this doesn’t work, you can switch to the Martingale strategy. But if it does, you have earned yourself quite a profit.

The Fibonacci Strategy

Math enthusiasts, this one’s for you. Fibonacci was a famous Italian mathematician that conducted a series of numbers known as the ‘Fibonacci sequence.’ In this sequence, every third number is the sum of the two that come before it.

By following this simple rule, you will need to place your bet in the amount of the two previous ones combined. In this case, you can still have a profit, regardless of the amount of rounds you won or lost.

Roulette is a fan favourite table game that is quite simple to understand. Once you’ve covered the basics, it is pretty fun to play. You can combine numbers and colours, and columns and rows as you please. By following simple rules of math and probability, you can have quite an amount of fun as you go.
